Fatal Incident: Donegal, 7 August 2026
A man in his 60s died following a collision between a motorcycle and a car on the N56 at Termon, Co Donegal. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene; the female car driver sustained non-serious injuries.

Motorcyclists remain among the most vulnerable on our roads. They account for a disproportionate share of road fatalities relative to the distance they travel, and collisions involving motorcycles and other vehicles are particularly unforgiving. Both riders and drivers have a shared responsibility — riders to ensure they are visible, properly licensed, and wearing appropriate protective gear, and drivers to check carefully for motorcycles, particularly at junctions and when overtaking.

Based on our own running tally compiled from news reports, 117 people have died on Irish roads so far in 2026. At the same point last year, the Road Safety Authority recorded 107 deaths — meaning this year’s figure is running approximately 9% higher.
It is important to note that our count is drawn from media reports and tends to run slightly ahead of the official RSA figure, so this comparison is not a precise like-for-like. That said, the direction of travel is concerning and warrants attention. A difference of this order is not a dramatic statistical spike, but it is a meaningful one — representing real lives lost — and it underlines why continued vigilance matters.

Safety Advice: Motorcyclists and Drivers Sharing the Road
With summer well underway, motorcycles are a common and welcome presence on Irish roads. A few reminders for all road users:
For motorcyclists:
- Always wear a properly fitted, certified helmet and appropriate protective clothing
- Ride at a speed that gives you time to react — rural roads like the N56 can present sudden hazards
- Make yourself as visible as possible, particularly in low-light or overcast conditions
- Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs
For car and van drivers:
- Take an extra moment to check for motorcycles at junctions, roundabouts, and when changing lanes
- Allow motorcyclists adequate space — they need room to manoeuvre safely
- Avoid distractions; a moment’s inattention can have devastating consequences
