Incidents This Period

On Wednesday, June 11th, a man in his eighties lost his life following a collision between his car and a truck on the N2 at Edmondstown near Ardee, County Louth. The incident occurred shortly before 6pm during what would typically be evening commute hours.

The following day, June 12th, saw another fatality on the N21 between Abbeyfeale and Newcastle West in County Limerick. The victim was identified as 33-year-old Swedish national Axel Erick Wolfgang Liebsch Morales, who died in a three-car collision.

Our thoughts remain with the families and communities affected by these tragic losses.

Year-to-Date Context

The current toll of 86 road deaths represents a staggering 218.5% increase compared to the 27 fatalities recorded at the same point in 2025. This dramatic rise in road casualties demands immediate attention from all road users and reinforces the critical importance of road safety measures.

The involvement of heavy goods vehicles in one of this period’s incidents also highlights ongoing concerns about mixed traffic interactions on our national road network.

Safety Focus

The RSA continues to emphasize core safety messages that could prevent future tragedies:

  • Maintaining safe following distances, particularly around larger vehicles
  • Adjusting driving behavior for weather and traffic conditions
  • Remaining alert during peak travel times
  • Ensuring vehicles are roadworthy and appropriate for journey conditions

Moving Forward

As we progress through 2026, these statistics serve as a stark reminder that road safety requires constant vigilance from every road user. Each fatality represents not just a number, but a person with family, friends, and a community who will feel their loss deeply. By recommitting to safe driving practices and looking out for one another on our roads, we can work together to prevent further tragedies and protect the lives that matter most.
