Two separate collisions resulted in the loss of young lives during this four-day period. On June 4th, a 17-year-old boy tragically died following a collision between a car and lorry on the N3 in Kilnaleck, County Cavan, at approximately 6pm. Three days later, a 15-year-old girl lost her life in a two-car collision on the R503 at Rearcross, Co Tipperary, around 6.45pm on June 7th.

Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and communities affected by these devastating losses.

Year-to-Date Context

The current road death toll of 80 fatalities represents a deeply concerning trend, with deaths having more than tripled compared to 24 at the same point in 2025. This significant increase demands urgent attention from all road users and highlights the critical importance of road safety awareness and responsible driving behaviours.

The loss of two teenagers in this reporting period is particularly heartbreaking, serving as a stark reminder that road safety affects people of all ages and that every journey requires our full attention and care.

Safety Focus

The Road Safety Authority continues to emphasise core safety messages that can save lives: always wear seatbelts, never use mobile phones while driving, respect speed limits, and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. For young drivers specifically, the RSA stresses the importance of graduated driving experience and avoiding high-risk situations.

With the summer months approaching and increased travel expected, extra vigilance from all road users becomes even more crucial.

Moving Forward

Every road death represents an irreplaceable loss to families and communities across Ireland. As we face these alarming statistics, each of us has a responsibility to prioritise safety in every journey we take. By making conscious choices to drive safely, we can work together to reverse this tragic trend and ensure that everyone reaches their destination safely.
