Incidents This Period

Four serious collisions claimed five lives during this three-day period, with Thursday, April 18th proving particularly devastating as three separate incidents occurred across the country.

In Dublin, a 31-year-old woman tragically lost her life when her vehicle collided with a lamp post at the junction of Ring Road and Nangor Road in Clondalkin during the early morning hours.

Donegal witnessed the loss of two young lives when 18-year-old men from Derry died following a collision between their car and a lorry on the R236 at St Johnston on Tuesday evening.

A male teenager died in Sligo when his car collided with a van on the Ballymote to Tubbercurry Road around 11:40am, while in Monaghan, a woman in her 30s lost her life in a collision between a car and lorry on the N2 at Castleblayney on Thursday morning.

Our thoughts remain with all the families and communities affected by these tragic losses.

Year-to-Date Context

The current road death toll of 37 fatalities represents an alarming escalation compared to 12 deaths recorded at the same point in 2025. This dramatic 208.3% increase underscores an urgent need for renewed focus on road safety across all road user categories.

The geographical spread of incidents across multiple counties - from border regions to urban areas - indicates that road safety challenges are affecting communities nationwide, requiring a coordinated response from all stakeholders.

Safety Focus

The Road Safety Authority continues to emphasize core safety messages that remain as relevant as ever: the importance of wearing seatbelts, maintaining safe speeds, never driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and avoiding mobile phone use while driving.

Recent RSA campaigns have highlighted the particular risks associated with rural roads, where many of these incidents occurred, reminding drivers to adjust their speed for road conditions and to remain vigilant for other road users including commercial vehicles.

Looking Ahead

As we move forward, every road user has a role to play in reversing this concerning trend. Simple actions - checking our speed, ensuring we’re alert and focused while driving, and showing patience and courtesy to other road users - can make the difference between arriving safely and becoming a statistic.

The coming weeks present an opportunity for all of us to recommit to safer driving practices and to look out for one another on our roads. Every journey matters, and every life lost on our roads represents an irreplaceable loss to families and communities across Ireland.
