Overview

The period from April 10-13, 2026 marked another deeply concerning chapter in Ireland’s road safety crisis, with six people losing their lives across three separate incidents in Limerick and Tipperary. These tragic losses bring the year’s total fatalities to 86, representing a devastating 207% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Incidents This Period

Three fatal collisions occurred across the four-day period, each representing profound loss for families and communities:

On Saturday evening, April 13th, two young men tragically lost their lives in a four-car collision at Killeen, Ballinulty in County Tipperary, shortly before 6pm on what should have been an ordinary weekend evening.

The early hours of Sunday, April 12th saw two people die in separate car crashes, including one in Pallasgreen, County Limerick, highlighting how quickly road conditions can turn deadly during overnight hours.

On Friday night into Saturday morning, April 11th, County Tipperary experienced further tragedy with two separate fatal crashes claiming the lives of a woman in her 80s and a man in his 40s, demonstrating that road danger affects people of all ages.

Year-to-Date Context

The statistics paint an alarming picture of Ireland’s roads in 2026. With 86 fatalities recorded by mid-April compared to just 28 at the same point in 2025, we are witnessing an unprecedented surge in road deaths. This 207% increase demands immediate attention from all road users and reinforces the critical importance of the RSA’s ongoing safety campaigns.

All incidents during this period occurred on local roads, emphasizing the particular risks associated with these routes, which often feature narrower carriageways, reduced visibility, and varying road conditions.

Safety Reminder

The Road Safety Authority continues to emphasize the Fatal Five risk factors: speeding, drink/drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, distracted driving, and driver fatigue. As we move through 2026, these fundamentals remain more crucial than ever.

Every journey matters. Every decision behind the wheel has consequences. By reducing speed, eliminating distractions, and maintaining constant vigilance, we can honor those we’ve lost by preventing future tragedies. Our roads need not claim another life if we all commit to safer driving practices today.
